The current issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Volume LV, Number 37, highlights this discussion with a front page article ‘Blackboard Buys Another Rival, to Customers’ Dismay.’ The article notes that many colleges are considering a shift to open source course management systems such as Moodle and Sakai, but the primary stumbling block is training and support for their faculty and students.

This week, lynda.com is releasing two titles in the Online Training Library® specifically for teachers and students using the Moodle open source learning management system. As the Educational Technologist at Art Center College of Design, I work very closely with the great folks at lynda.com to provide training and support to our entire campus community. Art Center has recently launched our own campus implementation of Moodle and the response from our faculty and students has been so positive that I just had to share this experience with all of you by creating these two titles at lynda.com.

If you’re making the jump to Moodle for your campus, or even if you’re already using it, my goal with Moodle Essential Training for Teachers is to quickly bring you up to speed on everything needed to build courses in Moodle. The companion training, Moodle Essential Training for Students, was designed to get all of the students at your institution a leg up in learning to efficiently use the latest version of Moodle. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think of the courses, and hope you’ll share your experience using Moodle or other open source learning management systems.

In the title I take teachers step by step through everything you need to know to build a course on Moodle. From setting up your test server on Mac OS X and Windows Vista, to working with the HTML Editor, compressing Images, Audio and Video I cover all of the basics to get you started. Next we walk through setting up Resources, Assignments, and Activities. I show how to create custom databases, use the glossaries in creative ways and set up discussion forums. We then walk through creating a wide variety of multimedia rich quiz questions; incorporating images, audio, video and custom Google maps. Pulling it all together, we build a quiz that incorporates everything you’ve learned in the training. There is even a chapter to teach you how to run all of the administrative functions of your course such as backup, restore and importing data from another course on Moodle.

The training is available online at lynda.com and will be released on DVD shortly. Schools can also order multi-user DVD’s of the title to make the training available to their entire campus.

Cheers,
Chris
